The Third Landscape, a project by Angie Chen, Xin Cheng, Marjetica Potrč, Kastania Waldmüller and Yan Yan
The Third Landscape group engaged with the reed plants, a natural water filter. The reed plants on site are filtering water in the pond – water exiting the pond is cleaner than water which enters the pond. During our time of learning from and with the landscape we constructed floating islands from reed stems, and made natural bricks from mud and dry reed stems which anchor roots of several islands and help them build up the soil. To support the natural water purification on site we planted new varieties of filtering plants. We organized a tour of the pond to show our findings and finally we ceremonially seeded the pond with more filtering plants.
Working with the Third Landscape

We found a clean water pool in the midst of the reeds.

Roots of reeds clean water. They are biological rhizome structures: if separated from plants, a root starts a new plant.

Making floating islands from reed stems,

to let them float and find a home in the pond.

Planting new varieties of filtering plants in April,

and finding them thriving in June.
