Students exchanged knowledge with craftspeople from the city of Volos, Greece, during two weeks in May 2018. The Craftspeople’s Network: Taking Matters into Your Own Hands was inspired by Laura Bernhardt and Benjamin Tafel’s project, from hand to hand: Stories about Craftsmanship in Greece today.
In the project, students from the Design for the Living World class (HFBK Hamburg) collaborated with students from the Hybrid Ecologies Studio of the University of Thessaly. On May 9, the students organized a roundtable discussion with local craftspeople at the Giorgio de Chirico Art Centre in Volos, where the exhibition Cheirotechnes – Craftspeople’s Network: Taking Matters into Your Own Hands opened a few days later, on May 14. Along with documentation and a publication produced in the workshops, the exhibition included works by local craftspeople. On June 16, The Craftspeople’s Network project was presented and discussed in a public event at KOBA, an electronic textiles’ workshop in Berlin, as part of the Make City Festival.
